Recent research papers have shown the efficacy of using EMDR with individuals who are suicidal – this workshop will show EMDR Therapists how to use EMDR Therapy safely with this client group.

In order to safely treat individuals who are suicidal with EMDR Therapy, the workshop will show participants how to assess for the severity of suicidal intent and desire, allowing clinicians to take positive clinical risks. Simon will present theoretical models of suicide which will help therapists feel more confident in working with suicide. Simon will inform the audience about his work on using EMDR Therapy with individuals who are suicidal and to highlight current developments, and to show how the standard EMDR protocol can be used to treat individuals who are suicidal. The workshop will be interactive and show videos of his work with individuals who have a high desire for suicide and are experiencing suicidal flashforwards.

Key Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

• learn how to assess for the severity of suicidal intent and desire and be able to recognise what might be motivating suicidal intent

• understand how to take positive clinical risks

• become familiar with theoretical models of suicide

• be able to use the standard protocol to treat individuals experiencing suicidality

• learn what they could use as a target memory

• learn different cognitive interweaves that may help processing

Simon Proudlock is a a EMDR Europe Accredited Senior Trainer and a Consultant Psychologist for the NHS and in private practice. He has worked in a Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) for over 12 years and successfully completed a 15-month research project into using EMDR in a CRHTT and Acute Mental Health Ward. In 2012 he was awarded the Practice Prize by the Division of Counselling Psychology for his work in Solution Focused Therapy, and is author of 'The Solution Focused Way: Incorporating Solution Focused Therapy Tools and Techniques into Your Everyday Work'. More recently he achieved the award for Innovative Practice by the Division of Counselling Psychology for his research in EMDR with people who are suicidal. Simon is currently writing a book on EMDR and Suicidality to be published by Routledge in 2027.

This workshop is ideally aimed at therapists who have completed EMDR basic training.

The worskhop fee includes handouts, CPD certificates and access to the recording of the webinar for 3 months after the event.
